Week 14- Melting Ice
Learning This Week:
This week during lab, we discussed the phenomenon why ice melts faster on metal than it does on wood. We started by doing three different simulations do explain the phenomenon. The first simulation looked at the strengths of bonds and their melting points. The weak bonds had a lower melting point compared the the substance with stronger bonds took a higher heat to melt. The second simulation showed how particles transfer heat by bouncing around and hitting each other. It started with red particles on top and white on the bottom, as the red particles bounce around and hit each other, they end up mixing with the white particles and transferring its heat. The final simulation showed the amount of heat that was transferred based on what material it was. The materials included metal, wood, glass, and stone. The metal transferred the heat very quickly and the wood transferred heat the slowest. We concluded our lab section by creating a flip video that displayed our learning.
Application to Future Teaching:
The way that I would connect my learning from lab this week to my future teaching is by utilizing the simulation and flip video activities. I liked how I was able to visualize this phenomenon from a particle standpoint through the simulation. It helped me see how the phenomenon works based on different factors such as bond strength, heat applied, and the materials. The other part of lab was using a flip video to display our learning. I enjoyed working with my table group and constructing the elements for our video. We had fun making it creative and unique based on the research we did. These are two activities that I will include in my future classroom.

ReplyDeleteIt was very interesting to hear about why ice melts faster on metal than on wood because initially, I thought it would be the other way around. I also think the simulations would be a good introduction to the topic of melting, but something to do with older elementary students. I also think your questions are very intriguing and something we should investigate.
Hi Bailie! I love your olaf drawing! I also think that this a great thing to use in our future teaching careers and I also thought that this lab was a lot of fun to do!

I love how you talked about wanting to utilize the flip book in your class, because I think it's a great way for students to not only understand the material, but also display their own learning. I also wonder how ice would melt on different types of metal, rather than a completely different substance like wood.
